Description of Infrastructure and Rolling Stock
Bord na Mona standard rail track is, in general, 35lbs per yard (British Standard Rail) mounted on 2m long steel sleepers which are attached to the rail at 840mm intervals by steel clips and clip bolts. The gauge of the track is 9.14mm. The length of a standard section of track is 9.144m and the complete weight is approximately 540kg.
These sections are lifted and laid by special rail laying machines which were designed and built by Bord na Móna. Early tracks were very skilfully manoeuvred into position using a standard dragline with special track grabs which relied on the track‘s weight to keep them closed.
